How Your Morning Cup of Coffee Affects Your Eyesight

 

It’s no secret that Americans love coffee, with an estimated 400 million cups of coffee being consumed a day! Most people don’t realize however that coffee is considered a “drug” and, like any other drug, side effects do exist. Eye health is one of the last thing the public would think that coffee has an effect on, but new studies show that it does actually have an effect on your eye health. It isn’t as clear cut as its good/bad for your individual eyesight, as the two different studies yield two different conclusions.

The Good

In 2014, a study was conducted by Cornell, that shows a positive correlation between a reduction of eyesight deterioration and coffee drinkers. Coffee contains chlorogenic acid, which is an antioxidant that was proven to prevent retinal detachment in mice. The study had two groups of mice, one that was pretreated with chlorogenic acid, and another that was not. Then both were exposed to nitric oxide, which causes retinal detachment. The ones that were pretreated with CLA did not receive any retinal damage, while the majority of the other group of mice did.

This is great news for coffee drinkers, as well as people who are prone to retinal detachment, such as nearsighted people. This study will help scientists and eye doctors begin to develop a formula so that the CLA may be administered directly to the eye in the form of drops. This would increase its ability to prevent retinal damage from occurring and have a positive effect on all who use it.

The Bad

A study conducted by the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology suggests that people who consume heavy amounts of caffeine in the form of coffee have a higher risk of developing diseased exfoliation glaucoma; This has been known to be a cause of blindness. What is a “heavy amount” of caffeine? The study defines this as three or more cups a day, so if you fall into this category you may want to consider cutting back. The study also did not show this same relationship with other caffeinated drinks, so it is essentially unique to coffee.

So if you love coffee, this may concern you as you can’t imagine a morning without it. The good news is that it is not inherently bad for you. One or two cups a day won’t have any real adverse effects on your vision, so no need to fear. However, if you are drinking upwards of three cups a day, it would be wise to cut back. There are a lot of other issues associated with a high caffeine issues, so it is good for your health in more ways than one to cut back a little on your intake of coffee.
