This Year Johnson & Johnson's Vistakon Will Discontinue Select Acuvue Contact Lens Brands From U.S. Market

For those that might not have herd or even know, Vistakon is a division of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc., Vistakon has recently announced that three Acuvue contact lens brands will be removed from its U.S. product portfolio later this year.  Acuvue Bifocal, Acuvue 2 Colour and select base curves and parameters of Acuvue brand contact lenses will be discontinued at different points throughout the year.

Beginning on July 1, 2013, Acuvue brand contact lenses will no longer be available in 9.1 base curves or 8.4 and 8.8 base curves of parameters from -6.50 to -11.0.  Products with 8.4 and 8.8 base curves and parameters ranging from -0.50 to -6.00 however will continue to be available.

Acuvue 2 ColoursAcuvue Bifocal

Beginning on December. 31, 2013, all parameters of Acuvue Bifocal and Acuvue 2 Colours will be discontinued.

“Contact lens wearers continue to embrace innovative new materials, technologies, and designs that meet their vision, comfort and lifestyle needs,” said Vistakon president Dave Brown. “Providing patients the best vision correction product experience is a critical factor in helping eyecare professionals serve their patients and grow their practice.”

Vistakon is encouraging eye doctors and eyecare professionals to upgrade patients from older lenses to “more popular and innovative brands” such as Acuvue Oasys, 1-Day Acuvue Moist and 1-Day Acuvue TruEye contact lenses. “These brands are better poised to help make patients happy about the contact lenses they wear, and the doctor who fits them,” Brown said.

According to a survey administered by Vistakon, nine out of 10 doctors believe that their contact lens patients associate their contact lens wear experience with their opinion of them as a doctor and that patients’ product experience is either “extremely” or “very important” to the likelihood of them returning to the office for their next eye exam. Further, 99 percent of optometrists surveyed by Vistakon agree that keeping patients happy leads to practice growth through referrals.

If you are a user of any of the following brands, base curves or parameters, we urge you to schedule an appointment with your optometrist so that you can discuss your replacement contact lens options prior to July 1st so that you will have ample time to try all of your different options before the discontinue date.

If you are not pleased with this news, you next best option would be to stock up on your current contact lenses now while they are still being produced. However, you will eventually need to find a replacement contact lens brand once your contact lens stock pile becomes depleted.

For contact wearers like me, who like color but not a lot of color, what would be a good substitute for the Acuvue 2 colors contact?

I would definitely check out the freshlook color lenses. They are a niche splash of color without going over the top.

I have tried Freshlook colors and the lense is a horrible fit...you have to get used to the color in front of your eyes and the contact moves quite a bit. I could never go back to Freshlook. There should have been another alternative other than Freshlook. Make a replacement lense that has the same comfort as the Acuvue. Disappointing

avjajo is right. I've been wearing Accuvue Colors for many years and I loved the comfort and the color (green). My eye doc suggested I try Freshlook colors by Ciba Vision. Not only is the color horrible (supposed to be green but look grayish and turn my naturally light eyes dark)but they are very uncomfortable. They are thicker than the Accuvue Colors and made my eyes very dry. I had to take to take them out after just a few hours. I'm searching on the internet to see if there are any better colored contacts out there.

Hi Susan. Have you inquired about the Acuvue 2 opaques http://clecontactlenses.com/cgi-bin/shop.plx/SID=PUT_SID_HERE/page=acuvue2opaque.html or the Acuvue 2 enhancers http://clecontactlenses.com/cgi-bin/shop.plx/SID=PUT_SID_HERE/page=acuvue2enhancer.html? Another brand to look at is Cooper as they offer a product called Expressions - http://clecontactlenses.com/cgi-bin/shop.plx/SID=PUT_SID_HERE/page=expressions.html.

Let us know if you have any further questions as we would be glad to help.

I have tried ACCUVUE OASIS several times. My eyes end up red, the lenses dry out quickly on me and I can't read out of them. I try rewetting them enlarging my screen and everything is blurry out of them. What does Vistakon have for those of us that can only wear the Accuvue Bi-focal with any ease? The Oasis is not an Oasis for some, it is more like the desert and a fuzzy one at that.

Hi Patty. We are sorry about your experience. We recommend that you see your eye doctor so that he can examine your eyes and make the proper changes so that you can be comfortable wearing your contact lenses. Wishing you all the best.

Acuvue Bifocals are the best lenses I've ever worn. Very sorry Vistakon has made this decision. I've just tried Oasys and they are not nearly as good for me. Less water in them, much thicker, no "inside-out" markings, harder to remove and, most importantly, my vision is not as consistent nor as good. Also not as comfortable at the end of the day. I will hoard the Bifocals and hope something new comes out that works as well when I need to reorder in a couple of years.

I am also pretty saddened to hear that Acuvue bifocal is gone now. I didn't know about this until today, and it seems like a real shame. I thought those lenses were amazing, and I am hesitant about the "innovative new materials, technologies, and designs" when I had found something that worked for me.

Hopefully the new brands will live up to the hype.

I love the Acuvue 2 Colours Lenses! I wear the blue enhancers, & like them because they are comfortable, and subtle. I looked long and hard to find these lenses, and nothing out inthe market compares to these lenses.

Visikon/Johnson & Johnson is not giving us a newer better COLOR option. I really do not want to wear a clear lens, so this is really leaving the color contact lens consumer out in the cold!!! Not a happy camper.

I too just found out that the Acuvue 2 Colours will be discontinued after this year. I am terribly disappointed because the other options are not comfortable for me (the Oasis was a particularly miserable experience) so there seems to be no colored option available for me. After years of wearing the Acuvue 2 enhancers, I don't want to go back to clear lenses. I feel like the product is being pulled without a viable alternative available. Horrible service to loyal customers. Like others, I'm hoping to stockpile lenses and pray that my prescription doesn't change before a better option comes to market.

We hear what everyone is saying and feel your disappointment. All we can recommend is to either stock pile them from now until the end of the year of visit your eye doctor and begin looking for a replacement.

Aside from this all you can do is help spread the word because there are so many other people like you that did not know about this and will be in the dark come the new year.

I have worn acuvue2 enhancers for at east 10 years. I have a very thin tear line,. They are the only contact I can tolerate. On top of that, I just got tired of people asking about my eye color, so I tod them it was natural. What am I going to do!? My Dr. Showed me an alternatie at my last appointment. They were like a flourescent yellow. Yuck! I am very excited to find out if J &J is only discontinueing these here in the U.S. maybe there is hope.

Is this a way for J & J to get rid of a full warehouse of contacts so they can begin with a new fresh batch far in the future after they "say" that public pressure has gotten them to decide to keep making them? It seems like a marketing gimmick.

We posted several blog posts on our website regarding this as well as sent numerous emails to all of our customers so that they were made aware of this in a timely manner. See here and here. If you have not done so by now we recommend that you consult with your optometrist as to what options you have regarding a replacement contact lens.

I have worn the original Acuvues on an extended wear basis - i.e., continuously for 2 weeks at a time - ever since they came out. (That was recommended usage back in the day and I've never had a single problem in 25 years!) Which is more similar to the originals: Acuvue 2 or Oasys?

Hi Howard the answer to your question is a little tricky since everyone's eyes are not the same and respond differently to the different materials. We always recommend that you consult with your optometrist with regards to making changes to your rx because they would know what works best for your eyes conditions based on an updated eye exam.

very disappointed! I was shocked last week when I went to buy a new pair of my favorite lenses to know that it has been discontinued! I have been using Acuvue 2 for almost 15 years. Why a company would do such thing for their loyal customers?
throughout these years I have tried several other types and brands, but nothing like Acuvue2, they are extremely comfortable with no problems at all. I just went to re-order my ACCUVUE bifocals and discovered they have been discontinued. Everyone else must have already stockpiled them, because I cannot find "leftovers" at any website. My optometrist tried me on OASIS, which stuck to my eye and I had trouble getting them out. Following 3 days, I couldn't put anything into my eye, it was so irritated. And now I am irritated...disappointed...angry....and fearful that I will not find a comfortable substitute.

I just went to the eye Dr to find out that I can no longer get the Acuvue bifocals. He has me trying the Acuvue Oasys and I can't even begin to tell you how much I hate them!!!! They are thick and I assume my eyes can't keep them moist enough as just after a few minutes everything goes blurry unless I blink constantly. I can focus on nothing except how blurry everything is. And it's not the RX, that is perfect, it's these horrible lenses!!!!! I put my old Accuvue Bifocals in and saw as clear as always. I guess my Dr is going to have to find another company that makes better contacts for my eyes, now. I've been wearing the Acuve Bifocals for years now so I can't even express my frustration at the inferior product they have been replaced with. I am saving my last pair of Acuve Bifocals to wear to my daughters wedding so at least I can see without constant frustration!!!! Then I'll see how long I can go with wearing that pair before I have to be frustrated again or just give up and wear glasses again. No longer a fan of Acuvue!!!

I too have been wearing Acuvue bifocals for years and years! When I saw my doctor last year, he tried to switch me to something different since they were being discontinued. I tried probably 4 different kinds of bifocals and none worked. It was 4 weeks of blurry vision and discomfort as I tried new pairs. Finally he just reordered the Acuvue for me and everything was perfect again. Now that it was time to reorder this year, my doctor could not get them for me. I tried another brand and just like last time, they are thick, hard to get out, have no marks for which is the right side, irritated my eyes, and I couldn't read with them. I stuck it out for a week since they told me to give them a week so my eyes could adjust. I had no luck with them and had another miserable week since my job is clerical and requires me to see! I finally was lucky enough to find them at an internet site so I will be okay for another 6 months or so. After that, I can only hope that the manufacturer hears all our comments and will make them again!

What on earth prompted the decision to discontinue bifocals?!!!!They are thin, comfortable and easy to get in, and having the numbers round the edge makes them easy to get the right way round. Have tried others,(many!) and find they are like plates, thick and dry out quickly. A big bad brickbat from me, and no bouquets for discontinuing these great lenses.

I don't see WHY Acuvue couldn't come out with "color enhancers" in their Oasys or other brands. If they want a new marketing strategy, they should go for promoting updated versions of their newer lines (by adding colors, bifocals; etc) while running campaigns emphasizing bringing out the natural beauty of an individual.

There is no other solution for the Acuvue Bifocal contacts that works with comfort. The manufacturer needs to reconsider what this means to a large chunk of the population. Try putting yourself in their position understanding that your eyes are so vitally important to our well being and required for our daily needs. Until there are other options that work equally as well, Johnson & Johnson should seriously reconsider this discontinuance of the product that we all love and NEED.

Very disappointed they have discontinued the color contacts. I have two different colored eyes and I felt much more confident when I would wear the contacts. They were a blessing to me when I found them 15 years ago. Please bring them back!!!

With all do respect, worst decision ever to take Acuvue Colors out of the market. I've been using them for years now and I only wear colored contacts, I have already tried possibly all the other brands that are available in the market and I just can't adapt to them. Please, bring back Acuvue colors.

I'm just as saddened by this news as everyone else seems to be. Hopefully, they will be replacing these products with something similar (& possibly better?) in the near future. Take your frustrations and concerns to the decision-makers, themselves. Write letters, send messages on their website, make phonecalls, etc. It doesn't hurt to try (power in numbers) to get them to see the customers they are/will be losing due to this decision if they don't provide a replacement option that works for the users of the products they discontinued. Hopefully, you all still have at least one pair on-hand to be able to see to write them. ;) *** crossing my fingers ***

I am so mad and upset about this. I love my Acuvue 2 colors. I have been wearing them for years. I have tried all the other color contacts and hate them. They either change my eye color way to much and look extremely fake or the other enhancers don't really do much. I had one other color contact I use to like but they where very uncomfortable. These are perfect. They give me just a lil change I mean they do just what they say just enhance my own color and are very comfortable. To me its like taking away vehicles and replacing with sled dogs...it makes no since and is extremely stupid. thanks I will purposely avoid purchasing any of your products.

I am so disappointed that the Accue Vue 2 colours has been discontinued. I have tried the Freshlook colors and cannot see out of them. I wish they would reconsider and bring them back. I wore them for many years and loved them.

Why oh Why.. i have been using the Aqua contacts for over 10 years and always got so may compliments. That was the BONUS.. they were the only contacts that i found comfortable to feel like im wearing nothing. My optomitrist was getting frustated with me becuase everything else was rejected by my eyes!!! Please if anyone can find something comfort wise that compared with Acuvue 2 please let me know!!!! KLEEANN3@gmail.com.
I can live with out the color (even though its heart breaking) but i need the comfort or i will have to wear glasses around the clock or come with $$$ for lasik (unless thats what pushed Acuvue out!!?)

Please bring them back. The green color looked so natural. Wearing these contacts allowed me to not wear any makeup!

Please bring back to the color enhancers. I have been wearing the green contacts for 10 years and wasn't planning to stop any time soon. I was just informed today that these have been discontinued and have called 10+ companies searching for any leftovers in my prescription but have had no such luck. I tried the fresh look green contacts (4 different options) today in the doctor's office but none of them look as natural as the green color enhancers. PLEASE BRING THEM BACK!!!

Might as well throw in my two cents, though I don't think J&J will pay attention. I just returned from an eye exam, and was quite satisfied with the explanation the eye doctor gave me for trying the newer multifocal contacts, and agreed to give the Biofinity multifocal lens a shot. Pretty effective for reading and close-in activities, but definitely off the mark for distance viewing and driving. Bummer. I have worn Acuvue Bifocals for 15 years and been very pleased with the visual acuity and wearability of this lens, although if I now do some extensive reading I'll slip on a bear of 1.25x cheaters. When I return for a follow-up exam I'll ask for the ABs if they're still available, or I might hunt some down online. It looks like J&J will eventually lose me as a customer.

I have been wearing Acuvue 2 Colors for about 8 years and I love them, I can't believe they aren't going to make them anymore. I've tried another brand of colors and they are not comfortable at all. PLEASE bring back the colors. If not then Acuvue has lost another customer.

The decision to discontinue your Colors contacts was perhaps either the greatest marketing decision to spike up sales once you eventually do rebrand them again, and also simultaneously the cruelest to your customers. I have been wearing the Acuvue Colors 2 for about 8 years now and not only are you asking me to change my contacts but to change my lifestyle as well. You have made a rather large customer base very unhappy, and from now I will gladly discontinue using such a brand that treats its customers in such a terrible manner.

I hope the person that made this marketing decision loses their job.

I have been a loyal customer for over 10 years wearing acuvue colors . Ive seen myself in the opaque blue shade daily and taking them off the market is devastating. I have been forced to pay for/try other lenses as replacements and have hated them all thus far. Acuvue colors were extremely comfortable and I loved the colors. So so sooo utterly disappointed in this decision, acuvue...... :(

I am just discovering that the Acuvue Bifocal contact lens have been discontinued. I have used these contacts for at least 18 years and never would have thought they would discontinue them. I've tried other brands but none of them ever compared to the comfort and satisfaction that I got with the Acuvue Bifocal. I am 58 years old and I've never liked glasses (not even sun glasses) because I like my peripheral vision benefits! I am so disappointed that these are no longer available. This would be a great opportunity for some other Company to pick up what Acuvue is dropping ( with all of its loyal customer over the years) and begin to manufacture these Lens for us! Somebody please, please hear our cry!!

Bring the old ones back. I tried wearing the Oaasys Presbyopia lenses with the same prescription as my old lenses and I can't see nearly as well. Why can't you do as well with the new lenses as you did with the old? I suspect is has something to do with the thickness of the lens. The older lens is thinner.

OMG!! the Fresh Look Colors are so uncomfortable and ugly. Johnson & Johnson really made a bad decision to discontinue their color brand. I pray that they reconsider the decision....

Please bring back acuvue 2 colors! I am devastated that they have been discontinued! That may sound dramatic, but I have worn them for years! They are the most comfortable lenses for my sensitive eyes and the color is so natural. I really hope they bring them back!

I have read through this entire thread and couldn't agree more that other color enhancing contacts such as Alcon Air Optix Colors and CibaVision's FreshLook Dimensions are extremely uncomfortable in comparison to the Acuvue 2 Colours Enhancers. I wear an 8.3 base curve and can't find a comfortable contact. Like others, I've worn the Acuvue 2 Colours Enhancers for over 12 years and feel that Johnson & Johnson Vistakon has discontinued my "identity," in addition to a product. Even my ophthalmologist comments during every eye exam that the Acuvue product fits perfectly and looks so amazing! If the decision to discontinue the product was truly due to profit loss, than raise the price but don't discontinue a product that so many consumers count on for their daily sight and eye comfort. Boo to Johnson & Johnson Vistakon!!!!!!!

    Hello,

I have been wearing Acuuve 2 colours since 2002. I need to wear contacts to help correct my vision. This brand is very comfortable and comes in the base curve 8.3 that I need. Not a lot of other brands comes in the curve and they don't feel comfortable like these ones do. I wear the coloured contacts to help with getting them in my eyes. I was very disappointed that they are being discontinued. Really hoping that you will bring them back, as I am lost what to do when I run out for the contacts.

    Thank you

J&J discontinued their color lenses due to the fact they were not good sellers and the big push today is for silicone hydrogel lenses which are healthier for the eyes. Ask your eye doctor about Impression Colored Lenses or Air Optics Colored lenses. Regarding the Bifocals you should ask your doctor to fit you with either Air Optics Multifocals or Biofinity Multifocals both are comfortable and healthier for your eyes.

I have worn Acuvue enhancers fir years, and have no desire to change. I don't have any interest in changing but I will have to since I cannot find these anywhere. All the other color lenses are fake looking, the Aqua matched my eye color and "enhanced it". Why can't you make these in whatever you claim is better materials? Daily wear contacts are too expensive but I guess you know that and make big bucks on them. I will have to find a new lens, but I will make sure it's not a J&J product. You have lost my business and I will be switching my Son as well!
