Ever since she started dating Prince William in 2003, Kate Middleton has been in the fashion spotlight. Her impact has been dubbed “The Kate Middleton Effect,” pretty much saying that whatever she wears women in the U.S and U.K buy it in droves. With such a strong influence over the market, designers from all over the world would do just about anything to get Kate Middleton to wear a piece with their name on it. One of the more recent photographs of her show her rocking an American classic, the Ray-Ban Wayfarers in the tortoise colored frame. Middleton was seen wearing these frames on more than one occasion and they clearly seem to be one of her favorites. The Wayfarers are one of the most popular sunglasses of all time, and are the embodiment of youth and rock and roll culture. That just goes to show that it doesn’t matter if your British Royalty or an American college student, these Ray-Ban’s transcend all social classes. Seems like Bradgelina is over, although we thought it would be a perfect time to see how Brad Pitt’s sunglass style has changed over the years. In the 90’s Pitt was known to rock the small sport style sunglasses (like the ones he wore in Fight Club). This was definitely keeping with the trends, as these minimalist style sunglasses were all the rage in the 90’s. However, his more recent films and red carpet appearances have shown him to wear more aviator style glasses. Whether it is Ray-Ban 3025’s or Gucci 2281/s, he seems pretty dedicated to that style of frame and the teardrop lens shape. Then again, aviators have had a serious resurgence in popularity the last 10 years, so it makes sense that he is sticking with the trends. My guess would be that in another 6 years he’ll have a different go-to style, and I'm sure it will be very fashionable as well.
One of the summers big hits, the action/comedy movie “War Dogs”, depicts the true story of Efraim Diveroli and David Packouz as they get a multi-million-dollar government contract to sell arms overseas. Diveroli is portrayed by comedian Jonah Hill, while Miles Teller plays Packouz and it is shaping up to be a hit with a cast like that. While I have yet to see the movie, I immediately took an interest in the sunglasses that Hill wears in the trailer/ poster of the film.
At first glance they are clearly aviators, with their unmistakable teardrop lens. I originally thought that they were Carrera Speedway’s, as they have the thick frame aviator look that is reminiscent of 1980’s sunglass style (think Scarface sunglasses). However, looking into it a little bit more it became clear they were Gucci’s by the telltale G on the side of the arms.
They appear to be the Gucci 1018/S model with the Havana color frame. Gucci has been modernizing the aviator design with several models like 1627/S (Kayne West’s partial to these) and the 1076/N/S. They are made for the most part of high quality plastics to cut down weight and are highly sought after by celebrities looking to be a part of the Gucci Designer culture.
Gucci seemed to have done something right putting these glasses in the movie, as sales for the 1018/S model have increased since its release. It’s pretty amazing how easily a movie can have an impact with sales of products if its done correctly. As of right now these glasses are on Backorder until September 20th, so if you want a little bit of international arms dealer style you’re going to have to wait!
Though he’s better known for his world renowned music and his celebrity wife (Kim Kardashian West), recent years in the industry have helped to propel Kanye West into his role as a fashion icon. Whether it’s crazy printed tops (like his “In Memory of Taylor Swift” t-shirt) or his own fashion line, the things worn by Mr. West are certainly noted by many. Speaking of being noted, Kanye shines as bright as his smile in his Gucci sunglasses. These Gucci GG1627/S sunglasses have been spotted on West before, so you know they’ve got to be one of his favorites. Aviators have had a big comeback the last 5 years, especially with celebrities. Selena Gomez is often spotted wearing Ray-Bans, so it comes to no surprise that she is pictured here wearing these classic 3025 aviators. This particular pair is a little different than the originals because it has polarized lenses. These make great beach glasses because the polarized lenses help protect the eyes against the direct sun and the UV rays. From classic Wayfarers to blue lens Aviators, Beyoncé rocks the runway each day as much as she tops the charts. So which Ray Ban style is she slaying these days? Queen B was seen last month wearing none other than the RB3447 (pictured left). Even when she’s getting snapped by the paparazzi, Beyoncé is still flawless. Ray-Ban Wayfarers have been a staple with American fashion trends since the 50’s. Their design is considered today to be timeless, capturing what was good about the days past, while still remaining youthful and energetic. Today there are a seemingly endless amount of variations, colors, and lens types available that people can choose from, and that only helps to further its popularity across gender and income lines.
The year is 1952, and Ray-Ban had just released its newest frame design for their sunglass line, called the “Wayfarer.” They were designed by Raymond Stegeman for use by Bausch and Lomb (former owners of Ray-Ban). These sunglasses were revolutionary for the time, featuring a plastic frame that went against it companies traditional frame styles. Up until then, all sunglass frames were made of metal, like their popular aviator frame. Bausch and Lomb were able to develop a new molding technique for plastics which helped make these frames stronger than other types of plastic of that era. This combined with a new lens, which had an attractive mirror coating that also helped block out UV rays, meant these glasses had the whole package. This UV protection was provided through a patented process of superheating metal oxides in order to molecularly fuse them to the lenses. This ensures that the process is applied uniformly so viewing isn’t affected.
The popularity of these sunglasses spread fast, with movie stars and athletes seen wearing theses shades. Muhammad Ali, Ray Charles, James Dean, and Marilyn Monroe were among the early adopters. Even the president of the United States, JFK, was known to wear these glasses! Looking at the design of the glasses in relation to the time period, it’s no wonder why these glasses were popular. The fins on the glasses resemble fins on the popular cars of the day, such as Cadillac.
These glasses remained a very popular piece all the way up until the 70’s where their numbers started to dip. The plastic frames became very unpopular at that time because the round metal glasses that John Lennon wore became the must haves for that decade. By the end of the 70’s the sales for the frame had plummeted to the point of the line almost needing to be discontinued.
This was somewhat remedied in 1980 where the Blues Brothers famously wore these on the big screen, which began to rekindle public interest. Ray-Ban recognized the affect this movie had on sales and then in 1982 they signed a product placement deal to have their products featured in movies and TV shows. The following year, 1983, had the release of the film that would undoubtedly save the Wayfarer line, “Risky Business.”
One of Tom Cruise’s breakout films, “Risky Business” is about a teenager who get involved in some troubling affairs involving an escort and his dad’s Porsche. The film is considered a classic 80’s coming of age film, and was very popular with young adults. The Wayfarer sunglasses are prominently featured in the film, even appearing on the poster for the film itself. After the film was released, Ray-Ban sold an estimated 360,000 pairs of wayfarer by the end of that year. This led to Wayfarers popping up all over TV and other movies, and by 1986 1.5 million have been sold. Ray-Ban aviators also received a huge bump in sales thanks to product placement in movies like “Top Gun” and “Cobra.”
The 90’s saw yet another decline in sales for the Wayfarer line, and the Ray-Ban brand in general. They released the New Wayfarer model, which is a smaller version of the original that also isn’t tilted. This however wasn’t enough to save the company, and in 1999 Bausch and Lomb sold Ray-Ban to Luxottica.
Since then the Wayfarer line has regained some of its popularity, and Ray-Ban now offers them in a seemingly endless amounts of colors and unique designs. They are popular with celebrities like Robert Patterson and Reese Witherspoon, who are regularly spotted wearing these old school designs. Clearly there is something about this style that resonates with people from all different generations.

We are going to take a trip through the decades looking at the most popular styles from one decade to the next. It’s amazing to see how fast trends change, and to see what designs really stood the test of time.
Many consider the 1950’s post war period to be the most prosperous time in American history. Americans were spending more money on goods, and sunglasses were beginning to become very popular in the U.S.
Cat eye sunglasses were all the rage in the 50’s. Big name movie stars, like Marylin Monroe, wore these glasses to make a statement. They were popular with pattern designs, such as leopard, Havana, or polka-dotted and usually had a dark tint to them. These glasses are still popular with the Hollywood crowd, with big names like Kendall Jenner always seen wearing these type glasses.
Plastic frames were big in the mid 50’s and early 60’s. Ray-Ban had two of the most popular models for this style the classic Wayfarer and Clubmaster. People liked the plastic frame because they thought of it as more durable then their thin metal counterparts. These glasses are still popular today and are some of Ray-Ban’s best-selling models.
The sixties sunglasses style was almost completely dominated by round frame sunglasses. The sixties were big on peace and love, and everyone coming together as one. These round frames encapsulate this way of thinking perfectly, and all sorts of celebrities from that time chose to wear them.
These were very popular with females and started the whole oversized frame fashion movement, that still persists today. Companies like Gucci continue to make these bold flashy sunglasses that were popular with everyone from “hippies” to housewives. With these types of glasses: the flashier, the better!
The famous Beatle made these glasses legendary and true icons of the 60’s. They embody his spirit and style so well, that every Beatles fan of the day simply had to have them. In modern times, they certainly aren’t as mainstream, however that doesn’t stop the diehards from wearing them religiously. After all, he did actually help design these sunglasses!
The 70’s saw a significant departure away from the hippie style of sunglasses, and started to lean more toward rectangular shapes, at least for men. This was the era of disco and sunglasses were the ultimate way to show just how cool you really were!
Tinted, Small and Round
For women the round trend continued to an extent, only this decade saw the lenses shrink significantly. They also began to be tinted in odd colors (like blue and green), primarily because stars like Elton John loved wearing these odd glasses while on tour. These glasses sure looked groovy, but a lot of them weren’t very good at actually protecting your eyes from the sun.
Clint Eastwood was one of the many people in Hollywood who started wearing these cooler, sleeker, and tougher looking sunglasses. They depart from the easy going round glasses of the 60’s and take on a more defined look that was more clean cut. The lenses were usually gradient brown or black and could have been seen everywhere from discos to the police force.
Fashion trends in the 80’s were all about being extravagant and over the top. Whether we are talking about the crazy hair or sunglasses, everything had to be bigger and better. This was also a time where pop culture really started to become big and where one star wearing something cool in a movie, could ignite a fashion trend.
These big, flashy in your face sunglasses are so 80’s it hurts. Popular with ski lift operators (the 2nd coolest job in the 80’s), these glasses were actually practical at keeping the wind and snow out of your eyes, essentially working like actual ski goggles. Throw in a set of mirrored lenses and you are the coolest guy or gal on the slopes!
In the mid 80’s aviators finally became cool again, and it was thanks to the famous fighter pilot (number 1 coolest job in the 1980’s) film TOP GUN. This movie was actually sponsored by Ray-Ban, who was hurting in sales at the time, which is why theses were the only type of sunglasses featured. This reinvigorated public interest in these pilot glasses, because after this movie everyone wanted to be a hotshot fighter pilot!

For men, sport sunglasses were big in the 90’s, as they were the most practical for day to day life and not really much of a fashion statement. There was nothing ‘bold’ or “in your face” about them, they simply did their job and nothing more. They could be worn while doing outside activities, which was a major plus for people who wanted sunglasses on while playing sports.
In the 90’s everything from the previous decade was considered to be completely out of style. Although fashion trends from the 60’s and 70’s regained some popularity, especially the John Lennon style glasses. Stars like the Olsen twins and Courtney Cox loved wearing these glasses, and anything that was even semi-related to “Friends” was sure to be a hit with women everywhere.
Retro Is Cool again and So Is A lot of Things...
Our last two decades are hard to define a specific style to. The show Jackass made aviators cool again, while the public also took an interest in 50’s style cat eye glasses, as of late. In this writer’s opinion, it’s all about wearing what you like in the 21st century, as there are so many different types of sunglasses out on the market now. We live in a society that puts an emphasis on individualism and being yourself, so why shouldn’t that apply to sunglasses too?

George Clooney is a HUGE Persol fan. He can be seen wearing various different models, whether it be on the big screen or just walking around town. He wore the now discontinued Persol 2137 in “Oceans Thirteen,” and the 2883 model (also discontinued) in “The American.” Most recently, he’s been spotted wearing 3074S model by Persol. These glasses are very stylish, and have a very classy timeless look to them.
